The TI-82 was released after the TI-81 and TI-85 and filles the gap between them neatly. The TI-82 introduced a serial inte**ce to connect either two calculators or one calculator and a personal computer. Later Graphing calculators like the TI-83 got a smoother housing, view the restyled TI-82, too.
Dismantling this TI-82 manufactured in January 1994 reveals no surprises. There are a lot of rumors that the TI-82 was based on the TI-85 but we have our doubts: This TI-82 and a TI-81 manufactured in February 1994 use an identical printed circuit board (PCB) with just different RAM and ROM chips populated.
The hardware consists of a Z80 compatible Toshiba T84C00 CPU, a Toshiba TC14L010 ASIC (1.0 micron C-MOS gate array with 1,000 usable gates) for the glue logic, a Sharp LH531©1993 with 128k Bytes capacity and a Suwa Seikosha SRM2264 RAM with 8k Byte capacity for both user programs and user data. Don't miss an early TI-82 using a Toshiba TC541001AF OTP ROM (One Time Programmable ROM), instead the Mask ROM. Recebtly we discovered a TI-82 manufactured in July 1993 with ROM-Verison 10.0 burned into a Sharp LH531©1993 ROM!
The driver circuit of the LC-Display was reduced from three Quad-Flat-Pack chips of the original TI-81 to just one bare Toshiba T6A04 chip mounted on a flexible piece of circuit board attached between the display and the main PCB.
A special "teacher version" called TI-82 VSC combines the standard TI-82 features with a port to connect to a ViewScreen panel via a cable. Placing the panel on the overhead projector enlarges the image of the handheld screen so that each student can follow along.
The TI-82 got in 1995 a slightly modified appearance, please focus on the color of the TI-82 designator.
The TI-82 was mentioned in TI's press release dated August 15, 2002 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its invention of the electronic calculator.
